The Best Nungwi Tours

Sixteen tours, ranked by what they actually deliver — not by who pays us most.

We rank these on four things: the quality of the experience itself, how well it is run from a Nungwi or Kendwa base, the value for money, and what real travellers say afterwards. Ratings and review counts come straight from GetYourGuide and are checked regularly.

We earn a commission if you book through the links below, at no cost to you — which is exactly why the ranking reflects the trips rather than the commission. Several of our top picks are also among the cheapest.

How we rank these tours

We look at four things, in this order:

  • The experience. Time on the reef, the quality of the guiding, how animals are treated.
  • Logistics from the north. A great trip that means four hours in a minibus from Nungwi ranks lower than a good one from the beach.
  • Value. Not the lowest price — the most trip per dollar.
  • What reviewers say afterwards. We read the three-star reviews, not the five-star ones.
Our honest advice: book Mnemba for a morning early in your stay, when the sea is calmest and you still have spare days if the weather cancels it. Keep one evening for a sunset dhow, and one day for Stone Town — ideally as a night there at the start or end of your trip.

Still not sure?

Choosing a tour

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tour from Nungwi?

For most people, a morning trip to Mnemba Atoll for snorkelling and dolphins. The small-group trip from Kendwa (4.7 stars, around 1,400 reviews) is our top pick.

How many tours should I book for a week in Nungwi?

Two or three is a good balance: Mnemba, a sunset cruise and one inland day for Stone Town and a spice farm. Leave the rest of the week for the beach.

Is Safari Blue worth it from Nungwi?

It is a superb day, but it leaves from Fumba in the south-west, which is roughly two hours’ drive from Nungwi each way. If you are staying the whole trip in the north, Mnemba is the closer alternative.

Are tours available in other languages?

Yes. Italian-speaking guides are very common in Nungwi, and German, French, Polish and Spanish are often available. Filter by language on the booking page before you confirm.
