Mnemba Atoll is an oval coral reef several kilometres across, lying off Zanzibar’s north-east coast, enclosing the small private island of Mnemba (the island itself is reserved for guests of its luxury lodge). The reef around it is a marine conservation area, and it offers the best combination of clear water, healthy coral and big marine life on the island.
It is also where most visitors see dolphins: pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen in the waters off the atoll. Snorkellers see turtles, reef fish, starfish and, with luck, rays; divers find walls and coral gardens with good visibility for much of the year.
Top things to do at Mnemba Atoll
Snorkel the reef
Every Mnemba trip includes at least one long snorkel stop over the shallow coral gardens. Equipment is provided, but a well-fitting mask of your own makes a big difference.
Look for dolphins — responsibly
Sightings are common but not guaranteed. The best operators keep their distance and do not chase pods; avoid boats that encourage swimmers to jump in on top of the dolphins.
Dive the atoll
Nungwi’s dive centres run regular trips to Mnemba’s walls and coral gardens. Certified divers can usually do two dives in a morning; beginners can take a first-time dive programme.

How to get to Mnemba Atoll
- From Nungwi and Kendwa: boats run round the northern tip and down the east coast — roughly 45–75 minutes each way depending on the boat and sea state. Most tours include hotel pickup.
- From the east coast: boats from Muyuni and Matemwe beaches are much closer to the atoll, and some Nungwi tours drive you there first to shorten the crossing.
Insider tips
- Go early: the sea is usually calmest in the morning and the first boats get the reef to themselves.
- A conservation fee is charged per visitor and it has risen recently — check whether your tour price includes it.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest, and never stand on or touch the coral.
- If you get seasick, take something before you leave: the crossing from Nungwi can be choppy.
